C’mon, Scott! Nobody likes a party pooper –

Why even call yourself a Republican if you only vote with them 54% of the time?

WASHINGTON — Scott Brown and the Republican Party need to make it official and just break up already. Watching Brown continue his awkward dance around his party’s positions is as uncomfortable as watching that convention kiss between Al and Tipper Gore.

Unless you’ve been under a rock, you know what Brown prides himself on — his independence. Brown’s camp is quick to remind folks he only votes with the GOP 54 percent of the time. And that he was the first in line to tell Todd Akin to get lost. And that he sent a letter to Reince Priebus blasting the GOP’s abortion platform.

What’s the quickest way to draw Brown’s ire? Link him to Republicans such as Mitt Romney or Paul Ryan. Them’s fighting words, as Elizabeth Warren learned.

So this week, as the GOP gathers in Tampa to bask in all their collective Republicanness, Brown will scarcely be found. He’ll show up Thursday, in the convention’s final hours, just in time for Romney’s official coronation. But he won’t be there Tuesday or Wednesday to blast the party’s abortion platform in person. No, he said he’d leave that battle for others such as U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, both of Maine, to fight.

A spokesperson for Brown said the senator, a member of the Army National Guard, has Guard duty scheduled in Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday. What a convenient coincidence.

Here’s the problem with Brown’s arms-length relationship with the GOP: As long as Brown has an R after his name — and accepts the funds and other support from the GOP party machine — he is a Republican. As such, not only does he have a responsibility to that party to support it, he also can’t run away from it any time it’s politically expedient for him to do so.

At the very least, he has a duty to help the party’s presidential candidate — who happens to be from Brown’s home state. When I asked about Brown’s support for Romney, spokesman Colin Reed told me: “It’s always a proud moment for Massachusetts when one of its own is nominated for president of the United States, whether it’s a Democrat or a Republican.”

So there you have it: Brown is about as excited for Romney as he was for John Kerry and Michael Dukakis. Now that’s support!

Sure, leaving the party entirely is a difficult thing to do in the middle of a heated race.

But Brown’s independent battle cry would be more believable if he put some action behind his words, and there are plenty of ways to do that. For starters, he can stop donations from his PAC to candidates who support the GOP platform. He can decline funds from the national party. Frankly, it’d be a far more authentic move to skip Tampa altogether in protest of the party’s abortion platform. But he can’t keep trying to have it both ways.
