Ryan, in Cincinnati, blasts NFL refs

Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan told a Carthage (Cincinnati) crowd today that it’s time for the NFL to get rid of replacement refs.

Ryan, a Green Bay Packers fan from Janesville, Wisc., was referring to the hotly disputed call at the end of the Monday Night Football game between the Packers and the Seahawks. The referees – hired to replace striking union referees – called a hail Mary pass a touchdown.

“Give me a break,” said Ryan at the start of his town hall meeting at Byer Steel in Carthage. ”It’s time to get the real refs and it reminds me of President Obama and the economy. If you can’t get it right, it’s time to get out.”

On the referee controversy, the Republican Ryan now finds himself on the same side as former president Bill Clinton.

Ryan wove several football analogies into his town hall meeting, in which he took questions on immigration, college loans, and who’s to blame for the bad economy.

Ryan said he and Mitt Romney will tackle the debt crisis, improve unemployment and cut spending if they’re elected.

Ryan spoke mostly in generalities about how he and Romney would solve those problems and criticized President Barack Obama for not fixing them during four years in office, the Associated Press wrote.

Ryan next will meet Romney at what their campaign says is an afternoon victory rally at the Dayton International Airport.

Obama also will be in Ohio this week as he visits the college towns of Bowling Green and Kent on Wednesday.

Both candidates have new ads aimed at winning working-class voters who could help swing the election.

Here’s some reaction from the crowd, courtesy of Miami University intern Jenn Smola:

“I like how he talks about the debt, the economy and all that, I think it’s wonderful. That’s my main thing, is that and getting rid of Obamacare. –Nancy Jewell, 64, Sharonville

“I want to hear something different than the same message.”- Joann Keller, 66, Kenwood

“I think he’s going to help us get on a budget, getting us back to being able to work, for our country to be strong as it used to be.”– Carol Brown, age 68, from Maineville, Ohio. And about her Miami University sweatshirt that said “This Medicare Senior Loves Paul Ryan” on the back: “The day [Ryan] was selected I made this sweatshirt, because people were saying that he was going to destroy Medicare as we know it, and I did not feel that way so I made this sweatshirt because I’m a Medicare senior, I’m 68, and I strongly support him.”

“I’m here to fully support the Romney-Ryan campaign….This whole election preserving our country for the young people.” –Tom Bryan, candidate for Ohio House of Representatives, District 33

Before Ryan’s arrival, the crowd was entertained by country band Pistol Holler. Two members of the band are self-employed with their own small businesses; one member is unemployed:

“They called us and asked us to play, and you really can’t pass up the opportunity to play for the possible president, next vice president of the country. We’re all actually supporters of the Romney campaign so it was great to actually get the call from the side you’re supporting”. –Josh Cupp, band member, 37, from Eaton
